We have several pets of our own and rescue more fairly often. However, this is a story about the cancer of 5 pets that belong to friends and family. The number one connection between them all is that all of the owners use weed killers and chemical fertilizers on their yards often (evidenced by tumors on the paws) and that the animals go for walks on yards that spray (posted or not- many states are not yet legally required to post notices when public or private property has been sprayed). Also, the chemical flea treatments that many veterinarians use (Advantage, Frontline, Interceptor with built-in flea control) is causing many tumors along the spine where it is applied- interceptor is of course eaten by the animal where internal damage is caused.
Here in Lancaster where natural flea treatments (tea tree oil, basil leaves, etc.) are just beginning to be accepted, the pet Cancer rate is phenomenol and many vets are not yet making the connection to enlighten the pet owners. Our neighbors down the street use Frontline and spray their yard about 4-5 times per year and their dog, Margo, just had a grapefruit sized tumor removed and testing revealed that it was almost exclusively composed of pesticides!
I have a acquaintance that used to own a lawncare business that claims that they have to pay a lot of vet bills for their customers whose pets have gotten sick even though the pet owners stayed off the grass until it was dry, as they were instructed by the lawncare companies. The true "safe" time is 4 to 6 WEEKS with a minimum of 2 weeks before pets (usually not having the bare minimum protection of shoes like people) or people, should be on the yard. Pass the word; other countries have banned the use of lawncare chemicals due to the health implications, but the chemical industry has more lobbying power then pharmaceuticals.
Keep your pet safe. It really makes us sad to see this happen to any animal. We choose to protect our pets and steer clear of the chemicals (both internally and outside). Best of health and vitality to your pets!! P.S. The dog referenced in the section above the 'your story' actually belongs to my brother. |
